Prof. Gautam Chakrabarty qualified as a doctor from the prestigious Sir Robert Grant medical college in Mumbai in 1985. He then specialised in orthopaedics and was awarded the D.Orth and MS Orth. from the Mumbai University. He obtained a further degree of M.Ch Orth from the university of Liverpool in 1995. He obtained his FRCS Orth degree in 1997 and was awarded an Hon FRCS by the royal college of surgeons of Edinburgh.

He completed his training in orthopaedics in London and Bristol rotations. He did the prestigious Bristol knee fellowship and did a trauma fellowship in Germany to complete his training. He moved to Huddersfield in 1998 and has been a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS trust since.

Prof. Chakrabarty is a specialist knee surgeon. His main interest is in uni compartmental, patello femoral, total knee and revision knee replacement. He also carries out meniscal repairs, cruciate ligament reconstructions and cartilage repair. He also has an interest in trauma and hip replacement surgery but also in teaching and research.

He has been awarded a title of senior lecturer by the university of Leeds. He looks after medical students from the university whilst in Huddersfield. He is the clinical tutor for the trust and is responsible for the junior doctors. On behalf of the trust, he ensures that junior doctors receive adequate, appropriate training and their educational needs are met. He is the speciality tutor for the orthopaedic registrars on rotation from Yorkshire deanery and is the deputy training director of the Yorkshire orthopaedic rotation. He lectures regularly on national knee and trauma courses for doctors and para medical staff. He also participates regularly on international knee meetings.

He runs the West Riding knee research unit responsible for prospectively recording the outcome of surgical procedures carried out under his care. The unit is supported by a research nurse and physiotherapist. The unit has links with the department of mechanical engineering at the Huddersfield university. They carry out a number of research projects in collaboration. He has publications related to joint replacement surgery. There are a number of on going research projects within the research unit.
